It’s about time to open up the windows and dust the far reaches of your home that typically never get attention. You might have a checklist or two for reference, but there are certain items that always get forgotten about or done wrong. We’d like to give you a fighting chance this year with the most common spring cleaning mistakes to avoid this season!

Spring cleaning

#1. Spring Cleaning with No Plan

Many of us just want to get the seasonal tasks and cleaning out of the way, so we dive headfirst into it without setting the correct time aside or organizational plans. The truth is, this type of cleaning and maintenance will require a different approach from your regular routine. If you don’t have a plan, you will miss things, have to backtrack, and possibly repeat tasks.

Before you get into it, make a checklist. Check out this extensive one that that goes room by room and includes some forgotten about items. Next, set aside the right time to do these things. Avoiding this step will lead to a rushed job. Get your family involved! Tackle items one by one on different days to avoid burnout or take a whole day. Everyone cleans differently. Do what works best for your schedule and style.

#2. Missing the Importance of Tools

You can have the correct plan and implementation, but if you are using the wrong cleaner, your task might be in vain. Before you get into it, plan on what would be the best tool for the job. One big mistake we see people make is neglecting their vacuum sweeper. Make sure the chamber is cleaned out regularly, brush roll is cleared, and filters cleaned. Your sweeper will work much better and last longer!

This might sound like more trouble than it’s worth, but a little research also helps too. Check out this YouTube channel on spring cleaning tips. She uses a lot of common-sense home remedies that work great. Here’s her Spring-Cleaning Motivation Marathon from last year. It might just help you get more motivated!

#3. Having a Negative Mindset

spring cleaning positive attitude

Most of us don’t enjoy this undertaking. It might even be something you absolutely loath. We understand. That is why it’s even more important to plan this out. Maybe pick a time where you can treat yourself and the family afterward or a day where there is nothing else going on. Pay attention to your stress level and if you have to, put it off, that is okay!

When the time comes, set yourself up for success. Get enough sleep. Nourish yourself. Put on some good music. Do a little cleaning research, if that helps get you in the mood. If all of this still sounds like pulling teeth, you can hire this task out. Look for reasonable companies that are proven to do great work! We trust Gwen’s Gleam with all of our clients’ deep cleaning needs. They are highly rated and work hard to give you the results you will be wowed by.

#4. Forgetting the Top of the Room

We often start cleaning at eye level, but this is one of the biggest spring cleaning mistakes. You’ll work up a sweat dusting all the surfaces and realize that you forgot the ceiling fan. When you start to clean that, you might as well have forgotten about all the surfaces! Arg! Work from the top to the bottom, finishing with the floors. Don’t forget about door frames, cob-webby corners, and the tops of doors.

#5. Ignoring the Mattress

You might have conveniently forgotten about the mattress because, “how on earth do you clean a mattress?” It seems complicated, but doesn’t need to be. It’s a very important task because it can harbor dust mites, which cause a lot of respiratory conditions. You can use a steam cleaner or at the very least, sprinkle baking soda and sweeping it up. After this task, consider purchasing a mattress protector that you can just throw in the wash.
