For an item so useful, you’ll want to keep it looking good for a long time. That’s where we come in. At Olmec Reflections, we have a unique process for area rug cleaning that we’d like to share with you. Here’s how we restore and keep area rugs looking their best!
Step 1: Inspecting the Area Rug
Before any area rug cleaning begins, our area rug cleaning expert likes to do an on-site evaluation. It’s here that we get an idea of the rug’s quality, size, and condition. We also like to take photos and possibly videos of the rug and the rug tag for the record. It’s also great to catch this footage for some satisfying before and afters!
After the evaluation is through, a quote is negotiated. Quotes are tricky with area rugs. We will not charge the same rate for a gently used $20 rug as we do a $400 Persian rug with pet stains. It will often vary and sometimes by a significant amount. We charge between $2 to $4 a square foot.
Step 2: Transporting the Area Rug to the Shop
We take the rugs back to the shop for at least a week. Why not do them on-site, you might ask? This is so our rug cleaner can focus the right time and attention on the rug cleaning needs. We also have a space that is necessary to carry out the process. The process is a multi-step method that is essential to the rug’s optional spot removal, cleaning, and drying.
Step 3: Close Inspection for Stains
The owner of the rug might have pointed out troubled areas, but when it goes back to the shop, we like to go over it from end to end to make sure we miss nothing. Stains and spots are noted, photographed, and documented for future recognition.
Step 4: Sweeping and Dusting
Even if the rug appears to be debris-free, it is still thoroughly swept and dusted. We use a premium quality vacuum along with a special tool with a beater bar to get all of the dust out of the deep-down fibers. We do this process on the front and back, as the back needs ample attention too.
Step 5: Stain Removal
For every stain, we use a pre-treatment to bring it to the surface. Then we choose what type of removal tactic we will use. Not all stains are created equal. Urine requires a special enzyme to remove its stain and odor. If you spill anything red on the carpet, we have specialized formulas that can target that color. This may take some time, depending on how old the stain is and the saturation rate. A few rinses and repeats might be in order until the stain is gone.
Step 6: Rinsing
You might think it’s unnecessary to mention this step, but we feel we must because of its importance. Far too often we see this step rushed, resulting in soap residue left behind. When soap residue remains, it will make your rug or carpet a sticking point for all that it encounters. We focus heavily on rinsing with clean water several times to make sure ALL contaminants and soaps are gone.
Step 7: Drying
After rinsing, we remove the excess water. When the rug is no longer soaked, we hang the rug and use fans, air movers, and dehumidifiers to dry it. Occasionally, we will flip the rug over to get even drying. You don’t want to roll a rug that is not fully dry for the possibility of mold or mildew growth. Step 8: Inspection of the Area Rug
After the process is complete, our rug cleaning expert will then do a complete inspection of the clean rug to make sure it is up to standard. We document and photograph it, paying special attention to the areas that needed stain removal. If everything looks good, we transport it back to the client!
